Winter and Eczema - Tips to Enjoy the Season

Eczema can prevent you from looking and feeling your best, and the season change can present additional challenges for eczema sufferers. Harsh temperatures and lower humidity can worsen eczema flare-ups, but with the right planning and care, the whole family can enjoy the winter season.

Create an environment you can control, such as your home. A humidifier can help lessen the effects of dry, heated air and might be the saving grace for eczema during the winter. An optimal humidity level is between 30%-50%, in higher humidities there is a risk for dust mites to develop. There are endless options and sizes to choose from when selecting a humidifier, just make sure it can fill the space in which you will place it.

Cold, dry air can result in cracked and painful skin and eczema flares. Skin exposed to the cold, dry air can easily become irritated, and should always be covered when outside. Use eczema clothing as layering pieces. These garments are made of TENCEL® fabric, making them thermo-regulating so they absorb sweat and wick it away from skin. Winter weather can be brutal on hands and feet. Cold, dry air can result in cracked and painful skin and eczema flares. Skin exposed to the cold, dry air can easily become irritated and should always be covered when outside.

The best way to manage hand eczema is to apply an eczema emollient such as Vaniply and put Eczema Treatment Gloves on immediately after. Eczema on feet can be healed in a similar process with an Eczema Treatment Socks. It is a quick, easy, and safe way to minimize your winter-related eczema.

Daily skin care is a must in the winter. Apply dry eczema clothing over an eczema emollient or apply the eczema clothing damp under a dry layer for wet wrap therapy, one of the most effective eczema treatments. See below for direction of effective wet-wrapping.

Vitamin D

If you can’t escape winter temperatures this year, consider adding a Vitamin D supplement to the routine. Studies have found a connection with skin infections and low levels of Vitamin D. Because of its strong healing power, Vitamin D has proven to be beneficial for eczema surfers at all ages. Carlson’s Vitamin D drops are designed for babies and are free from added chemicals. It can be found on Amazon or at your local vitamin shop or drugstore. Consult with your doctor before taking vitamin D supplements.

Keep your home moist with a humidifier, take care of your hands and your entire body with protective clothing and lots of moisturizer. Taking these preventative steps can help keep the skin happy all through the season.
